Liposuction
What is Liposuction?
Some areas of fat stubbornly resist your efforts in the gym and dieting. While not a complete solution to weight loss, liposuction offers a method to shed remnants of undesirable fat to reveal your new fit, attractive figure. Liposuction fends off the lack of self-esteem and confidence that these fat deposits bring with them.
Benefits of Liposuction
Liposuction is an effective way to remove stubborn body fat from traditional trouble spots on the body such as the abdomen, thighs, upper arms, and neck. Using suction through a stainless steel tube called a cannula to break up and remove fatty tissue, Liposuction shapes areas of the body into more attractive forms by removing fat areas and rejuvenating the patient’s figure in the process. Patients who are generally physically fit, are within the normal weight range for their age and body type and have healthy, elastic skin are the best candidates for liposuction.
Liposuction can be part of a mommy makeover surgery. A mommy makeover is a combination of cosmetic surgery procedures that are carried out all at once during one operation: a breast lift or/and augmentation, a tummy tuck, and liposuction (normally of the tummy and lower body). These are, in fact, the most common plastic surgery procedures for women overall. Liposuction costs in Ontario can vary greatly.

Liposuction Candidates
Good candidates for liposuction include:
- Adults within 30% of their ideal weight who have firm, elastic skin, and good muscle tone
- Healthy individuals who do not have a life-threatening illness or medical conditions that can impair healing
- Nonsmokers
- Individuals with a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for body contouring
If you are bothered by excess fat deposits located anywhere on your body that don’t respond to diet or exercise, liposuction may be right for you.
After liposuction, patients may have swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the treated area. These side effects will diminish with time. Any post-operative pain is addressed with oral prescription medication. GraceMed will provide you with comprehensive aftercare instructions. Depending on the region of your treatment, your GraceMed surgeon will advise you in choosing a compression garment to wear after the surgery. Compression garments significantly decrease any post-op pain while also speeding recovery. By slightly pressurizing the treated area, compression garments help body tissue reconnect and encourage more distinct contours to form after the surgery.
In general, patients should relax and stay off their feet as much as possible for the first twenty-four hours post-surgery. After the first day, patients should take a slow stroll several times a day to encourage proper circulation. It is essential that any strenuous movement, including bending and lifting, is avoided within the first two to three weeks after the surgery.
Typically Combined Procedures with Liposuction
Liposuction can be combined with other procedures to achieve your desired results. Personal preferences and goals as well as guidance from your GraceMed surgeon will help determine the treatments that can complement your desired goals. The most common body contouring procedures to combine with liposuction are listed below.
Liposuction and EmSculpt®
Emsculpt® utilizes electromagnetic energy to tighten and lift muscles in the abdomen and buttocks. The energy causes the muscles to contract supra-maximally (at a greater strength than is possible with traditional exercises). When combined with liposuction, Emsculpt® can help patients achieve better muscle definition and more sculpted body contours.
Liposuction and Thermage®
Thermage is a very effective follow-up treatment to liposuction, which generates heat and can smooth out lumps or uneven skin. Liposuction may also be dramatically more effective if combined with a tight lift, tummy tuck, or other procedures that can remove excess skin.
Types of Liposuction
SmartLipo and SlimLipo
SmartLipo and SlimLipo are considered the gold standard in laser lipolysis by leaders in the plastic surgery industry. These procedures can be used to remove localized areas of surplus fat that have accumulated because of pregnancy, aging, or genetic factors. SmartLipo and SlimLipo are most effective when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon who understands balance and proportion and can apply these concepts to body sculpting.
These procedures work by liquefying fat in a targeted area, coagulating the tissue, and tightening the skin for a slimmer and smoother shape. Because of the special technology used, there is very little bruising and downtime after a SmartLipo or SlimLipo procedure.
Though SmartLipo and SlimLipo are gentle procedures, they’re capable of producing striking results that can last a lifetime. Most patients who have laser liposuction experience a 25% reduction in the size of the areas treated. This usually translates into a one to a three-inch reduction in circumference.
Laser lipolysis systems can be used to contour the abdomen, waist, thighs, hips, chest, back, upper arms, knees, and neck. Laser lipolysis results in ultimate precision, accuracy, and consistency when slimming and shaping the body.
Body Jet Lipo
Conventional liposuction involves making small incisions in the treatment area and using a hollow tube to loosen fat before it is suctioned or vacuumed from the body. In contrast, Body Jet Lipo water-assisted liposuction involves a less invasive method: Using a gentle jet of water to irrigate fat and remove it permanently from the body.
Body Jet Lipo is preferable to conventional liposuction for the following reasons:
- Less tissue trauma (reduced risk of blood vessel damage and less swelling)
- Does not require as much manual pressure to remove fat
- Shorter overall treatment time
- Less postoperative pain and bruising
- Local anaesthetic can be used
- Minimal downtime
- Rapid recovery
- Excellent and precise results
- Fat cells are left intact, allowing a fat transfer if desired
Liposuction Recovery
After liposuction, patients may have swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the treated area. These side effects will diminish with time. Any post-operative pain is addressed with oral prescription medication. Your GraceMed surgeon will provide you with comprehensive aftercare instructions.
Depending on the region of your treatment, your GraceMed surgeon will advise you in choosing a compression garment to wear after the surgery. Compression garments significantly decrease any post-op pain while also speeding up recovery.
Liposuction patients need to understand that everyone recovers differently, and there is no rush to return to work or school. Depending on the treatment you received, you may need one to two weeks off work. It will take several months and close attention to healthy eating to see the best possible results from the treatment.
What is Renuvion?
Renuvion cosmetic technology is the result of extensive scientific research and clinical development. Because of its proprietary balance of helium and RF energy, Renuvion has been described as ideal for medical procedures where precision and control are key to an effective treatment. Renuvion is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment. Renuvion delivers even, controlled energy with exceptional precision and dramatic results.
Over time, we all struggle with changes to the look and feel of our skin. With age, the skin around the face, neck, and other parts of the body (such as the neck, thighs, or arms) can begin to sag and droop, resulting in a much older appearance. With Renuvion skin rejuvenation, you can once again have firm and youthful skin–all with a minimally invasive approach and less downtime. Renuvion is only available in our North York Location.
How does Renuvion work?
Renuvion treatment is performed in-office. A local anaesthetic may be used to help minimize any discomfort. During the treatment, your GraceMed surgeon will use the Renuvion handpiece to target your specific skin concerns. The cold helium plasma and RF heating combine for a dual thermal effect™ that causes an immediate contraction and tightening of the underlying tissue. Your surgeon can fully customize the depth of your treatment for precision results.
Combining Renuvion and Liposuction
Renuvion can be used to boost a patient’s outcome when undergoing liposuction. Renuvion supplements fat reduction surgery by simultaneously tightening surrounding tissue, and helping with loose skin associated with fat loss. This results in a slimmer, firmer, and natural-looking reshaping of the body.
Is there downtime with Renuvion?
Renuvion is minimally invasive with fewer risks and recovery compared to traditional surgery while still providing dramatic results. With this treatment, you may experience redness red after the initial days after treatment and peeling may occur – similar to that of a mild sunburn. This will last roughly 1-2 weeks as your skin heals.
Renuvion provides patients with a near-instant firming effect of the treated skin, while also stimulating your body’s natural production of collagen. As new collagen forms over time, you will notice further improvements to the look and feel of your skin.

Commonly Asked Questions
Does liposuction leave a scar?
Liposuction procedures do leave a few scars as small incisions have to be made in order to extract fat. However, the scars are very small, a few millimeters in length and are made in discreet locations.
Is Liposuction available in my area?
We offer Liposuction in our clinics in Oakville, Burlington, North York, and Mississauga.
How old do you have to be for liposuction?
If you’re a healthy candidate for Liposuction, it can technically be performed on anyone 17 to 78 years old. However, if your skin elasticity is too weak to mold to smaller contours following liposuction, your GraceMed surgeon may recommend another procedure to help you reach your cosmetic goals.
During your consultation with your GraceMed surgeon, they will assess your age, the area of treatment, and items such as:
- Assess the quality of your skin
- Assess the degree of localized fat excess
- Assess the degree of cellulite or dimpling in the area(s)
- Your current health
After your initial consultation, your surgeon will address if you’re a candidate for Lipo.
Is liposuction safe?
As with any major surgery, liposuction carries risks, such as bleeding and a reaction to anesthesia. It’s important to discuss all the risks of liposuction with your doctor before having the procedure.
How much weight can you lose with liposuction?
Managing expectations. Patients should not expect to lose a dramatic amount of weight with liposuction. Liposuction should produce significant improvements in aesthetic appearance. Liposuction should not be regarded as a method for weight loss, in appropriate patients it can produce significant cosmetic improvements. Liposuction is no replacement for a hard work at the gym and a healthy diet. Liposuction will not correct cellullite nor sagging skin, liposuciton is usually stacked with other proceedures for optimal outcomes.
How many areas can be done during liposuction?
In most cases, three to four areas can safely be done with a healthy patient. Dr. Grace from our Burlington location can do most areas in one surgery.
Can Liposuction make me lose weight?
Liposuction is very effective for eliminating fat that is stubborn and does not go away even with effective dieting and exercise. Weight loss does generally happen after liposuction but is not a substitute for losing weight. Liposuction helps contour and define the body and a healthy diet and exercise can be very effective to achieve your goals.
How much does Liposuction cost?
The cost of Liposuction in Toronto, Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga, and North York can range from $500 to $8,000 depending on the area. GraceMed Liposuction price starts at $2000 and up and the cost can vary on your needs and areas of the body that need treatment, there are cases where it can be less depending on the area of the body.
Are there risks to having Liposuction or SmartLipo™?
Just like any surgical procedure, liposuction and SmartLipo™ do carry some risks. Infection, bleeding, and nerve damage may occur, and since liposuction removes fatty tissue from the body, the threat of losing too much fluid is also a possible risk of the surgery. If not treated, fluid loss can lead to shock, so liposuction patients should be especially careful to monitor their fluid levels during recovery after the procedure. Other possible risks of liposuction include the development of blood and fat clots, friction burns on the skin, and harmful drug reactions.
What if I gain weight after Liposuction?
Liposuction, when done by an experienced GraceMed surgeon should have lasting contouring effects on the body. In the case of weight gain, your liposuction contours and proportions should remain the same post-liposuction procedure. The weight gain will make contours slightly less visible. If the weight is lost again, your contours will most likely resume their post-liposuction size and shape.
