No matter the reason, breast augmentation is a very personal experience. In our practice, the most common reasons for this procedure are weight loss/gain, effects of gravity and aging, size changes due to pregnancy, or it may be a requirement after a mastectomy or an injury.
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular and common types of plastic surgery in North America. GraceMed cares about our patients and we take an exceedingly personalized and meticulous approach towards client service.
Breast augmentation surgery is designed to enhance the shape and volume of the breasts. Women who are interested in breast augmentation surgery are great candidates if they are interested in adding larger breasts, looking for breast symmetry, and improved cleavage. The procedure can also be beneficial to women who would like to restore lost breast volume and shape after childbirth, breastfeeding or significant weight loss. Breast Augmentations are most commonly performed with implants, which are used to shape and increase the size of the breast.
Breast Augmentation Candidates
A breast augmentation is a very personal experience. The most common reasons for breast augmentation are the effects of aging, weight loss or gain, a change in breast size due to pregnancy, or it may be necessary after a mastectomy or an injury.
You may be a candidate for breast augmentation if:
- You are physically healthy and you aren’t pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have realistic expectations
- Your breasts are fully developed
- You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too small
- You are dissatisfied with your breasts losing shape and volume after pregnancy, weight loss or with aging
- You are unhappy with the upper part of your breast appearing “empty”
- Your breasts are asymmetrical
- One or both breasts failed to develop normally or have an elongated shape
Types of Breast Implants
There are two types of breast implants available in Canada. The first type is saline implants. These devices have a silicone elastomer rubber shell and are filled with a saline solution (saltwater). Advantages of saline implants are that they can be inserted through a smaller incision, they may cost less and they will be easily apparent if they leak or deflate. Some surgeons feel that saline implants provide a less natural look and feel than silicone gel implants.
The second type of implant is called a cohesive silicone gel implant. These are made with the same silicone shell but they are filled with a cohesive silicone gel. Advantages are that they often feel softer and more natural than saline implants, however, they do require a slightly larger incision and may be more difficult to detect if they break or rupture.
Fat transfer breast augmentation essentially uses liposuction to take fat from other parts of your body and inject it into your breasts. This procedure is for women who are looking for a small increase in breast size and would prefer natural results.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
It will be a few days before you fully recover after your breast augmentation. There may be some discomfort with painkillers prescribed to help alleviate the pain. Your breasts may be wrapped in dressings to help support them during your recovery. You may also wear a support bra to help minimize bruising and swelling for a few weeks. Your breasts will be sensitive to any direct stimulation for a month or so. After a couple of days, you will be encouraged to walk to help your recovery. But you will need to avoid strenuous activities for at least four weeks. Your return to work depends on the type of work that you do.
Generally, most people who have this procedure are happy – A Breast Augmentation has a 95% “Worth It” rating on RealSelf.

Commonly Asked Questions
How long do breast implants last?
Breast implants tend to be replaced after 11-15 years, although the more common cause is not the implants themselves, but your preferences or your breast tissue. Everyone is different. We recommend talking with your GraceMed surgeon for a complete overview on implant longevity during your initial consultation.
How much does breast augmentation cost in Canada?
The average cost of a breast augmentation can vary depending on many factors such as type of surgical procedure and product. When you have your initial consultation your GraceMed surgeon will provide you with all the information you need to know so you can decide on a course of action.
How safe are breast implants?
All breast implants sold in Canada undergo a scientific review for safety and effectiveness before Health Canada issues a medical device license. Hundreds of thousands of patients opt for breast implants every year and report no adverse effects. When a possible association with a rare disease is reported, plastic surgeons follow the science to provide detailed, accurate information for full patient consent and decision making. Like any medical device, breast implants carry a risk of complications, and in the event any complication develops, patients should consult their plastic surgeon to address it in a timely manner.
How painful is breast augmentation?
Pain and discomfort are common after breast augmentation surgery. You’re likely to feel tired and sore for a few days following your surgery. You may also experience a burning sensation in your nipples for about two weeks, but this will subside as bruising fades.
