Sebaceous cysts are non-cancerous growths under the skin. GraceMed provides treatment for skin cysts if they are painful or infected, or simply if you don’t like how they look.

What is a Sebaceous Cyst?

Sebaceous Cysts are non-cancerous growths under the skin that are caused by blocked or damaged oil glands or ducts in the skin. They are typically found on the scalp, face, neck, or torso. Small cysts don’t usually cause pain, though if they become larger, or inflamed, they may become tender or painful. Some sebaceous cysts may go away on their own, while others may require intervention and be drained or removed.

What Causes Cysts?

Sebaceous cysts are caused by the blockage or damage of a gland or duct. This can often be caused by trauma to the skin such as a scratch, surgical wound, or skin condition such as acne. The body continues to produce natural oils in the skin, but due to the damaged gland/duct, these oils and other skin components become trapped under the skin, forming a sebaceous cyst. They often grow slowly, so there may be some time between the trauma and noticeable growth of a sebaceous cyst.
