GraceMed Vampire Facial So I Got This Done Blog Series

Thanks to the infamous photos of Kim Kardashian covered in her own blood, smiling, and looking gorgeous as ever, the vampire facial has made headlines worldwide.

In our series, So I Got This Done, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about getting a medical aesthetic procedure from injectables to skin treatments. Whether you decide to go under the needle or laser, you deserve a reputable Practitioner and honest information.

“The stigma of “Getting work done” is thankfully no longer.”

Although they’re likely more shock value, clickbait-type headlines, it’s essential to ask if micro-needling, the medical aesthetic term for the vampire facial, is worth all the hype. Before we delve into that, let’s define micro-needling – a handheld roller device with tiny needles designed to puncture enough small holes on your face’s surface to stimulate collagen production. Kim K received micro-needling with plasma-rich platelets (or PRP). Now imagine pouring the platelets from your own blood back into those tiny holes. Intriguing, isn’t it?

I’ll be honest; I was a bit skeptical. Was this just another celebrity-rich people thing, or would I see a real difference in my non-rich civilian skin? I signed myself up at the GraceMed Downtown Toronto Clinic to find out.

The treatment is promoted for reducing fine lines, improving texture, and encouraging collagen growth. If any one of those improved, I’d consider it a win.

My Vampire (Micro-Needling  PRP) Facial

Sitting in my medical esthetician chair at GraceMed Downtown Toronto Clinic, it all sounded a bit like something out of a horror movie. Rachel, my esthetician, gave me the choice of blood extraction. I figured that if I was going to do it, I might as well go all out, so I opted for the full-on Dracula experience. She explained that PRP contains proteins, including growth factors and cytokines, which help skin tissue repair itself, leading to improvements. What’s not to love about that?

The first step was the blood draw. I’m not squeamish, so this part didn’t bother me at all. My blood was then placed in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the rest of the blood.

Now it was time for the actual treatment. I was nervous about this part. I can handle pain, but pain on my face is not ideal. I flinched when Rachel dabbed my face with a cleanser to remove my makeup.

What did I get myself into?

She patiently walked me through every step, and as the needles made contact with my skin, I finally exhaled. Either the numbing cream was working, or micro-needling wasn’t that bad after all. Or maybe both. After a few passes over my forehead, cheeks, upper lip, nose, and chin, I was done.

Pink, yes. Covered in blood, no.

My face didn’t swell or bruise either.

The healing process was the best part for me. If you’re the same kind of strange, then having layers of your skin safely peel off is the best thing ever. I resisted the urge to pick and tug at the flaps of dead cells and was ultimately rewarded. A month later,

I’m thrilled with my results.

Visibly improved skin texture, fewer fine lines, lighter acne scarring and hyperpigmentation, and smaller pores. And since the body takes time to produce collagen, I can expect to keep seeing improvements.
