What is a Breast Augmentation?

No matter the reason, breast enhancement surgery is a very personal experience. In our practice, the most common reasons for this procedure are weight loss/gain, effects of gravity and aging, size changes due to pregnancy, or it may be a requirement after a mastectomy or an injury.

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular and common types of plastic surgery in North America. GraceMed cares about our patients and we take an exceedingly personalized and meticulous approach towards client service.

Breast augmentation surgery is designed to enhance the shape and volume of the breasts. Women who are interested in breast augmentation surgery are great candidates if they are interested in adding larger breasts, looking for breast symmetry, and improved cleavage. The procedure can also be beneficial to women who would like to restore lost breast volume and shape after childbirth, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss.  Breast Augmentations are most commonly performed with implants, which are used to shape and increase the size of the breast.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

Breast Augmentation, also known as breast implant procedure in which breast implants, are implanted to transform the appearance of the breasts by enhancing shape and symmetry while increasing the desired volume.

Your procedure will most likely be performed in the surgical suite in one of our private operating rooms or in a pristine clinical hospital setting.  The operation is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts between 1 hour and 1.5 hours. Following the operation, you will need to have someone take you home and help and monitor you for the first 24 hours. GraceMed Surgeons strives to fulfill each patient’s aesthetic goals while maintaining a natural appearance with minimal visible scarring.

Breast Augmentation Candidates

Breast augmentation is a very personal experience. The most common reasons for breast augmentation are the effects of aging, weight loss or gain, a change in breast size due to pregnancy, or it may be necessary after a mastectomy or an injury.

You may be a candidate if:

  • You are physically healthy and you aren’t pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have realistic expectations
  • Your breasts are fully developed
  • You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too small
  • You are dissatisfied with your breasts losing shape and volume after pregnancy, weight loss or with aging
  • You are unhappy with the upper part of your breast appearing “empty”
  • Your breasts are asymmetrical
  • One or both breasts failed to develop normally or have an elongated shape

Types of Breast Implants

There are two types of breast implants available in Canada: saline implants and cohesive silicone gel implants.

Saline Implants

These devices have a silicone elastomer rubber shell and are filled with a saline solution (salt water). Advantages of saline implants are that they can be inserted through a smaller incision, they may cost less, and they will be easily apparent if they leak or deflate. Some surgeons feel that saline implants provide a less natural look and feel than silicone gel implants.

Cohesive Silicone Gel Implant

These are made with the same silicone shell, but they are filled with a cohesive silicone gel. Advantages are that they often feel softer and more natural than saline implants, however, they do require a slightly larger incision and may be more difficult to detect if they break or rupture.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

Fat transfer breast augmentation essentially uses liposuction to take fat from other parts of your body and inject it into your breasts. This procedure is for women who are looking for a small increase in breast size and would prefer natural results.

Breast Lift with Implants

For patients who would like to increase the volume and shape of their breasts as well as restore a more youthful, upright position. The procedure is known as an augmentation-mastopexy. A breast implant improves the overall breast shape and enhances volume, and a lift elevates the nipple and tightens the skin for a more youthful appearance.

Every individual has aesthetic preferences. GraceMed Surgeons take their time in a consultation to listen and learn from our patients and their aesthetic needs.  This comprehensive consultation helps to determine whether a breast lift/augmentation is the right course of treatment, also, what type of breast implant and placement will achieve the best result.

The breast-lift portion of the surgery can be done at the same time as your breast augmentation.  In some cases, the surgeries may have to schedule for different times.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

It will be a few days before you fully recover after your breast augmentation. There may be some discomfort with painkillers prescribed to help alleviate the pain. Your breasts may be wrapped in dressings to help support them during your recovery. You may also wear a support bra to help minimize bruising and swelling for a few weeks. Your breasts will be sensitive to any direct stimulation for a month or so. After a couple of days, you will be encouraged to walk to help your recovery. But you will need to avoid strenuous activities for at least four weeks. Your return to work depends on the type of work that you do.

What is the Lifespan of Breast Implants?

Breast augmentation represents a considerable investment. There is a misconception that breast implants should be replaced every 10-12 years, when in fact women can theoretically live their entire lives with the same implants. Implants should only be changed if there is an issue.

Implant manufacturers are confident in the longevity of their products that most offer a lifetime guarantee. This means that in the rare case an implant ruptures, the manufacturer will provide a replacement implant at no charge.

You should also note that in the rare case of rupture, cohesive gel and saline implants are particularly safe. While implants used decades ago had higher risks of rupture, today’s implants are much safer. If a rupture does occur, saline implants contain a saline solution that will be absorbed by the body, while the solid silicone in a cohesive gel implant will not leak.

Furthermore, several studies have shown that women with breast implants are no more likely to develop breast cancer than women without implants.

Commonly Asked Questions

How much does breast augmentation cost in Toronto?

The average cost of breast augmentation can vary depending on many factors such as type of surgical procedure and product. When you have your initial consultation your GraceMed surgeon will provide you with all the information you need to know so you can decide on a course of action.

Am I a candidate for Breast Augmentation?

If you are in reasonably good mental and physical health, you are an ideal candidate for breast implants. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have breast cancer, or an abnormal mammogram then it’s likely you are not a good candidate for breast implants.

Will I have scars from my Breast Lift with Implants?

With most surgery, you will have scars. All breast surgeries result in some type of scarring, but in most cases, the scar may be minor or not visible if it is positioned on the breast in an area that hides the scar such as the inframammary fold or crease under the breast. In addition, scars fade with time.

What results should I expect from a Breast Augmentation?

After augmentation breast implants tend to sit high on the chest wall.  In a few months, they will settle into a more natural position. Once your body has fully healed, the swelling will go done and implants will sit into proper position.  Patients can expect shapelier, more voluminous breasts, often with a greater degree of cleavage.

How safe are breast implants?

All breast implants sold in Canada undergo a scientific review for safety and effectiveness before Health Canada issues a medical device license. Hundreds of thousands of patients opt for breast implants every year and report no adverse effects. When a possible association with a rare disease is reported, plastic surgeons follow the science to provide detailed, accurate information for full patient consent and decision making. Like any medical device, breast implants carry a risk of complications, and in the event any complication develops, patients should consult their plastic surgeon to address it in a timely manner.

How painful is breast augmentation?

Pain and discomfort are common after breast augmentation surgery. You’re likely to feel tired and sore for a few days following your surgery. You may also experience a burning sensation in your nipples for about two weeks, but this will subside as bruising fades.

How Long Does a Breast Augmentation Procedure Take?

Our Doctors have spent their careers developing and perfecting  Breast Augmentation techniques into a refined breast augmentation procedure. The breast implant operation takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour and the majority of our patients are able to return home within a few hours after completion of the operation.
